Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government for Telecommunications and Information Technology, has confirmed that the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) will continue to remain operational following the successful reduction of mobile handset import duties.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday afternoon after visiting the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) building, Taiyeb said the government had previously committed to keeping NEIR active if import duties on mobile phones could be lowered.
“Our commitment was clear—if we were able to reduce duties on mobile imports, NEIR would remain in operation. We have succeeded in reducing those duties, and therefore NEIR will continue. The system is currently active,” he stated.
During the briefing, Taiyeb also strongly condemned the recent attack on the BTRC building, describing it as an unprecedented incident involving a state institution. He emphasized that such acts are unacceptable and assured that those responsible would be brought to justice.
“This type of attack on a state institution is completely unprecedented. We strongly condemn the incident and have requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to take necessary action against those involved,” he said.
He further confirmed that a case has already been filed in connection with the attack and expressed hope that decisive legal action would deter similar incidents at government institutions in the future.
“We expect that such disgraceful attacks on government institutions will not be repeated in Bangladesh,” Taiyeb added.
