Lessons from 16 years in Bangladesh’s corporate market

Sixteen years in Bangladesh’s corporate market have taught me something interesting. We have become much better at promoting products, but I am not convinced we have become equally good at understanding customers.

I have seen marketing evolve from traditional advertising and field activities to digital campaigns, performance marketing, and now artificial intelligence. The tools have changed dramatically. Yet many businesses still approach marketing with the same question: How quickly can we generate sales?

Sales matter, obviously. But focusing only on immediate numbers often makes us overlook the bigger picture.

In my observation, one of the common mistakes in our market is confusing visibility with credibility. A brand can spend heavily on advertising, generate impressive engagement, and still struggle to earn customer loyalty.

Attention can be purchased. Trust must be earned.

Healthcare marketing has made this distinction even clearer to me. Customers are not simply comparing prices or attractive features. They are considering reliability, practical value, service quality, and whether a company can deliver what it promises.

I believe this lesson applies far beyond healthcare.

Now AI is changing the equation again.

Today, AI can assist with content creation, customer analysis, campaign optimization, and many repetitive marketing tasks. Work that previously required considerable manual effort can be completed faster.

But speed creates another challenge.

When everyone has access to similar tools, producing more content will no longer be a meaningful competitive advantage.

The real difference will come from knowing what to communicate, whom to communicate with, and why it matters.

AI can help analyze information, but marketers must still question its accuracy, understand local consumer behavior, and make responsible decisions.

For Bangladesh, I believe the next generation of marketing professionals needs stronger analytical thinking, commercial understanding, customer empathy, and the confidence to challenge conventional practices.

My advice to young marketers is simple: Learn AI, but do not build your entire career around operating AI tools. Learn how businesses work. Spend time understanding customers. Visit markets. Talk to sales teams. Study why people buy and, more importantly, why they refuse.

Because technology will continue to evolve, and some of today’s skills will inevitably lose value.

After 16 years, my strongest belief is this: AI may change how marketing is executed, but human judgment will determine whether that marketing makes sense.
