Dhaka, 2 November 2026: The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has increased the official price of a 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder by Tk 223, setting the new price at Tk 2,060 amid a prolonged supply shortage in the local market.
The revised price was announced on Monday and took effect at 8:00 pm. The previous official price was Tk 1,837, following a Tk 212 increase in the previous month.
Despite the latest adjustment, consumers have reportedly been paying between Tk 2,200 and Tk 2,300 for a 12kg cylinder over the past one and a half months. In some cases, customers have been forced to pay Tk 500 to Tk 700 above the officially determined price due to limited availability.
According to industry sources, nearly 10 million customers rely on LPG as an energy source. Around 80% of the fuel is used for household cooking, while the remainder serves industrial and transportation purposes.
The sector is almost entirely dominated by private operators, which account for approximately 99% of LPG imports and supply. Industry insiders have reportedly said that imports have not declined significantly over the past two months, despite a noticeable reduction in market availability.
Under the latest adjustment, the price of LPG has been set at Tk 171.68 per kilogram. The price of auto LPG, used primarily in vehicles, has also increased from Tk 84.62 to Tk 91.95 per litre.
BERC has been adjusting LPG prices monthly since April 2021. However, consumers have repeatedly faced prices above the official rate, particularly during periods of reported supply shortages. Complaints have also emerged over difficulties in finding cylinders even at higher prices.
The latest increase is expected to add further pressure on household energy expenses as consumers continue to deal with rising retail prices and supply concerns.
