Dhaka, 2 November 2026: Bangladesh Bank has launched a person-to-person (P2P) money transfer service using Bangla QR, allowing individuals to send money to one another by scanning QR codes instead of manually entering account or mobile numbers.
The central bank announced the new service in a press release on Sunday, 1 November, describing it as a step towards making digital payments easier and more accessible for individuals across the country.
Under the new system, users can scan a recipient’s Bangla QR code, verify the displayed information and complete a transaction. The process eliminates the need to manually type the recipient’s mobile number or account number, making person-to-person transfers more convenient.
How the Bangla QR P2P Service Works
Bangla QR has primarily been used for merchant payments, where customers scan a business’s QR code through a participating bank or mobile financial service (MFS) application to pay for goods and services. These transactions are commonly known as customer-to-merchant (C2M) payments.
The new P2P facility extends the same QR-based technology to transfers between individuals.
For example, a child can generate a P2P Bangla QR code through an application and share it with a parent. The parent can then scan the code, verify the recipient’s details and transfer the required amount without manually entering bank account information or other payment details.
Transaction Charges to Follow Existing Rules
According to the information provided by Bangladesh Bank, the new service will follow existing transaction fee structures rather than introducing a separate charging framework.
For bank-to-bank transfers, the applicable charges under the Inter-Bank Fund Transfer (IBFT) system will remain in effect. Transactions involving banks, mobile financial service providers and payment service providers (PSPs) will follow the previously established fee rates for inter-provider transfers.
A Step Towards Wider Digital Payment Adoption
The introduction of Bangla QR-based P2P transfers is expected to make everyday money transfers more convenient and reduce reliance on cash for personal transactions.
By extending QR payments beyond merchant transactions, the initiative could broaden the use of digital payment services and support Bangladesh’s transition towards a more inclusive and cash-light economy.
The service adds another option for individuals seeking to transfer money digitally, while its practical reach will depend on implementation and availability through participating financial institutions and payment applications.
