A proud moment for Bangladesh — BUET alumnus Dr. Ekram Hossain has been elected as the new Director of IEEE Region 7 (Canada).
Dr. Hossain completed his undergraduate studies at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) before pursuing higher education in Canada. He is currently serving as a Professor and Associate Head (Graduate Studies) at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba, Canada.
He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (FACE) and the Engineering Institute of Canada (FEIC). He was also elected as a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College (Class of 2016).
Dr. Hossain’s contributions to research have earned him global recognition. From 2017 to 2024, he has been listed as a Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher in Computer Science for eight consecutive years.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Hossain has received numerous international awards for his excellence in research and education, including:
- IEEE Canada J.M. Ham Outstanding Engineering Educator Silver Medal Award (2023)
- E. F. Glass Western Canada Merit Award (2023)
- IEEE ComSoc Best Survey Paper Award (2017)
- IEEE ComSoc Fred Ellersick Prize Paper Award (2011)
- IEEE ComSoc Technical Committee on Green Communications and Computing (TCGCC) Distinguished Technical Achievement Award (2017)
To date, he has published over 600 peer-reviewed papers. According to Google Scholar, he holds an H-index of 115 with more than 50,000 citations.
