Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that 2,701 constables will be recruited to the police force on an urgent basis, with the process set to begin very soon.
He made the remarks on Monday (February 23) after a meeting with heads of various departments at the Secretariat.
The minister said the government’s primary objective is to run law enforcement agencies in line with public expectations and to strengthen overall security management.
He also stated that firearm licences issued during the previous government’s tenure would be re-verified. Authorities will examine whether the licences were granted through proper procedures.
According to the minister, licence holders will be assessed to determine whether they were eligible to receive such permits. Licences found to have been issued for political considerations will be cancelled. Any weapons held under such licences will also be revoked.
He further noted that, to his knowledge, more than 10,000 firearms have yet to be recovered and are currently considered illegal. Legal action may be taken in connection with those weapons, and steps will be taken to recover them through due process.
The announcement signals a dual focus on strengthening the police force while tightening oversight of firearm regulations.
