Chattogram’s upcoming Laldia Terminal—located closer to the deep sea—is expected to accommodate vessels nearly three times larger than those currently handled at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), significantly enhancing Bangladesh’s maritime capacity.
According to insights shared through Infogram, the ability to berth larger ships will eliminate the need for transshipment at Sitakunda or Shiralaksha, reducing both turnaround time and operational delays. This improvement is projected to accelerate export logistics and create opportunities for more direct routes to Europe.
Ashiq Chowdhury, CEO of PPP Authority and Chairman of BIDA, noted that the new terminal’s strategic location will strengthen Bangladesh’s global trade competitiveness. By cutting transit time and improving cargo handling efficiency, Laldia Terminal is expected to play a crucial role in boosting the country’s supply chain performance and ensuring smoother international freight movement.
The terminal is being viewed as a transformative infrastructure upgrade that could help position Bangladesh as a more reliable and efficient maritime hub in South Asia.
