A major theft involving 259 bhori of gold jewellery has taken place at Shah Ali Shopping Complex in Mirpur, Dhaka, with police suspecting the incident was a planned operation. Five security guards assigned to the market have reportedly gone missing following the theft.
According to police, the burglary occurred sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday morning at two jewellery stores located on the second floor of the shopping complex under Darus Salam Police Station.
Authorities said approximately 200 bhori of gold jewellery was stolen from Al Razzak Jewellers, while another 59 bhori was taken from A Hossain Jewellers, bringing the total value of the stolen jewellery to 259 bhori.
Darus Salam Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Dulal Hossain said preliminary findings suggest the theft was carefully planned. He confirmed that five security guards responsible for the market have been missing since the incident, and investigators believe they may have been involved. Police are also examining whether additional individuals participated in the operation.
According to investigators, the market had its own security personnel, while each jewellery shop also deployed a night guard. Police said the guard assigned by the jewellery stores was allegedly rendered unconscious after being given sweets laced with sedatives before the thieves carried out the burglary.
Jasim Uddin, owner of Al Razzak Jewellers, claimed that CCTV footage from the shopping complex shows several security guards participating in the theft.
Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage and conducting operations to identify and arrest everyone involved. A case is being filed in connection with the incident.
