Dhaka, Bangladesh — Sonali Bank PLC reported a record net profit of Tk1,313 crore in 2025, marking a 32.8% year-on-year increase, according to its audited financial statements.
The country’s largest state-owned commercial bank achieved the strong earnings growth mainly due to a sharp rise in investment income from government bond holdings. The bank’s investment income surged 55% year-on-year to Tk9,799 crore during the year, helping offset pressure on its core lending business.
Despite the record profit, Sonali Bank’s net interest income declined significantly by 77% to Tk337 crore, as interest earnings from loans weakened while interest payments to depositors increased.
The bank’s earnings per share (EPS) rose to Tk28.99 in 2025, compared with Tk21.82 in the previous year.
Earlier this year, Sonali Bank also announced a record operating profit of more than Tk8,000 crore, supported by improved governance, higher recoveries from defaulted loans, and stronger investment returns. The bank said it had successfully reduced its capital shortfall and improved its capital adequacy ratio above the regulatory requirement.
Bank officials attributed the improved financial performance to tighter credit screening, recovery initiatives, and increased investment in government securities amid challenging conditions in the banking sector.
