The newly appointed Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Md. Mostakur Rahman, previously served as a member of the BNP’s Central Election Management Committee. His appointment marks the first time a business professional has been chosen to lead the central bank.
The government canceled the appointment of Ahsan H. Mansur, whose contract was valid until August 13, 2028, and officially appointed Mostakur Rahman for a four-year term, effective immediately. According to the Ministry of Finance’s Financial Institutions Division, the new Governor must terminate all ties with other organizations before assuming office.
Before the official announcement, a group of Bangladesh Bank officials had protested against Mansur. At a press briefing, Mansur reportedly said, “It will take me only two seconds to resign.” Shortly after, news of Mostakur Rahman’s appointment spread, and Mansur left his official residence.
Background of Mostakur Rahman
Born in Dhaka in 1966, Mostakur Rahman completed his master’s in accounting from the University of Dhaka and later earned an FCMA designation from the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB).
Alongside his political role in the BNP, he is also a seasoned businessman, serving as Managing Director of Hera Sweaters, an environmentally friendly factory in Narayanganj. Bangladesh Bank reports that Hera Sweaters had an outstanding loan of BDT 86 crore with Mutual Trust Bank, which was restructured last June after falling into default.
