Dhaka, June 30, 2026: The government has appointed Md Sarwar Hossain, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, as a Deputy Governor of the central bank on a contractual basis for a period of three years. The appointment was made under Article 10(4) of the Bangladesh Bank Order, 1972, according to a notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday.
With this promotion, Sarwar Hossain joins the top leadership team of Bangladesh Bank at a time when the country’s banking sector is undergoing reforms aimed at strengthening financial stability, governance, and regulatory oversight.
Sarwar Hossain has built a long career within Bangladesh Bank, holding several key positions over the years. Before becoming an Executive Director, he served as Director of the Governor’s Office and was involved in various policy and administrative functions within the central bank. He was promoted to the rank of Executive Director in 2025 as part of a broader leadership restructuring at Bangladesh Bank.
The appointment comes as Bangladesh Bank continues efforts to enhance regulatory effectiveness and support ongoing reforms across the financial sector. Industry observers view the inclusion of experienced career central bankers in senior leadership positions as a positive step toward maintaining institutional continuity and strengthening oversight of the banking system.
Bangladesh Bank plays a critical role in formulating and implementing monetary policy, regulating banks and financial institutions, managing foreign exchange reserves, and ensuring the stability of the country’s financial system. As Deputy Governor, Sarwar Hossain is expected to contribute to these responsibilities while supporting the central bank’s broader reform agenda.
The government notification states that his three-year contractual appointment will be effective from the date of joining.
