Dhaka, 24 October 2026: BRAC Bank PLC plans to issue a green bond worth up to Tk10 billion, positioning itself as the first bank in Bangladesh to undertake such an issuance, according to information from the bank.
The initiative is expected to be formally announced by BRAC Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tareq Refat Ullah Khan at a press conference scheduled to take place at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka.
According to the bank, the proposed bond will comply with Bangladesh Bank’s green bond guidelines. Proceeds will be used to finance environmentally sustainable projects, including renewable energy initiatives, green buildings and energy-efficiency improvements in the industrial sector.
A green bond is a debt instrument designed to raise funds for projects with environmental benefits. Investors receive returns according to the bond’s terms, while issuers channel the proceeds towards eligible sustainable activities.
In a disclosure published on 23 May, BRAC Bank said it planned to issue a green bond with a face value of up to Tk10 billion to support its environmentally sustainable financing activities. The bank’s board of directors approved the proposal at a meeting held two days earlier.
The proposed bond will have a three-year maturity and will be non-convertible and fully redeemable, according to the disclosure.
BRAC Bank already provides financing for a range of environmentally focused projects, including solar and wind energy initiatives, energy-efficient technologies, green infrastructure and responsible waste management through effluent treatment plants.
The proposed issuance would expand the bank’s sustainable finance activities by creating a dedicated funding channel for eligible green projects.
In October 2025, BRAC Bank also received regulatory approval to issue a Tk10 billion social bond, becoming the first institution in Bangladesh to receive approval for a bond of that type, according to the report. The proceeds were intended to strengthen the bank’s Tier-2 capital under the Basel III framework and support social development initiatives.
The planned green bond reflects the bank’s continued efforts to diversify its funding instruments while supporting environmental sustainability and responsible financing.
