Amazon is reportedly planning to replace up to 500,000 employees with robots — signaling a major shift in the U.S. job market. According to The New York Times, based on internal documents and employee interviews, the Seattle-based e-commerce giant aims to automate as much as 75% of its operations. The company expects to save approximately $12.6 billion between 2025 and 2027 through this massive automation initiative.

Amazon’s Automation Strategy and Workforce Transformation

Amazon has already begun deploying robots in its large international warehouses. In particular, at its new facility in Shreveport, Louisiana, more than a thousand robots are handling most of the packing and shipping operations — reducing the human workforce by nearly 25%. By 2026, the company plans to cut the number of employees there by half, and by the end of 2027, this model is expected to expand to about 40 facilities globally.

Although Amazon currently employs over 1.5 million people worldwide, the increased reliance on automation is expected to significantly reduce the need for human labor in the future.

Public Relations and Terminology Management

To mitigate concerns about large-scale job replacement, Amazon is carefully managing its public communication. Instead of terms like “automation,” “AI,” or “robots,” the company is promoting the use of phrases such as “advanced technology” and “cobots” (collaborative robots). This linguistic strategy aims to create a positive perception and soften potential backlash over job cuts.

The company claims that automation will lead to new types of tech-driven roles — such as robot operation and maintenance — though these positions will require specialized training and will likely be available to a smaller number of employees.

The Intersection of Human Labor and Automation

Amazon insists that automation will free workers from repetitive tasks and open opportunities for higher-skilled jobs. However, analysts note that the number of such opportunities may be limited, and the overall impact will likely result in a reduction of human labor demand.

Currently, Amazon is the second-largest employer in the United States with around 1.5 million workers globally. Since the pandemic, however, the company has slowed down its hiring and even permanently laid off more than 25,000 employees in 2025 — with further reductions reportedly planned across multiple departments.

Sales Growth and Future Outlook

Amazon’s long-term strategy aims to double its sales by 2033. The company believes that automation, AI, and advanced warehouse robotics will significantly reduce logistics and delivery costs, allowing it to maintain competitiveness while improving service efficiency and customer satisfaction.

However, this progress also implies an inevitable transformation of the labor market — where high-skill, tech-oriented roles will grow, but low-skill labor opportunities will decline.

Global Implications

Amazon’s large-scale automation plan is expected to have a ripple effect across global e-commerce and employment ecosystems. For countries like Bangladesh, which are increasingly integrating technology and digital commerce, this development warrants close observation. Understanding how such automation affects job structures and adapting workforce skills accordingly will be crucial for future economic sustainability.

Based on this analysis, Amazon’s automation initiative represents not just a corporate transformation, but a global signal of how technology is reshaping the future of work — an issue highly relevant for Bangladeshi business and technology readers.
