MTB Foundation has organised an eye camp in Naogaon to improve access to eye care for underserved mango growers and ethnic communities as part of its World Sight Day 2026 observance.
MTB Foundation, in partnership with Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital (IIEI&H), recently organised an eye camp in Naogaon under its community eye health initiative aimed at preventing avoidable blindness among mango growers and ethnic communities.
The programme was organised to mark World Sight Day 2026, observed under the theme ‘Love Your Eyes’. Samia Chowdhury, Chief Executive Officer, and Nazmus Sakib, Associate, of MTB Foundation attended the event.
The initiative addresses eye health risks faced by mango growers, whose livelihoods depend on prolonged outdoor work. Mango cultivation is a major economic activity in the Rajshahi Division, supporting local livelihoods and contributing to the wider agricultural economy. However, extended exposure to intense sunlight, ultraviolet radiation, dust, and potentially hazardous agricultural chemicals can increase the risk of eye-related complications among workers.
Through the initiative, underserved people, particularly mango growers and members of ethnic communities, received a range of eye care services. These included eye screening, medicines, prescription eyewear, and surgical treatment for conditions such as cataracts, pterygium, and tear drainage disorders requiring procedures including Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) and Dacryocystectomy (DCT).
The eye camp also featured awareness sessions on primary eye care, focusing on the importance of protecting vision and preventing avoidable eye conditions.
MTB Foundation plans to organise additional eye camps in Naogaon during the year to extend eye care services to more people in underserved communities.
The initiative highlights the importance of accessible healthcare services for rural and occupational communities, particularly those whose livelihoods may expose them to environmental factors that affect their long-term eye health.
