Dhaka, 10 October 2026: Bangladesh and Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom have discussed progress on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and preparations for connecting its first unit to the national grid.
Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev held a bilateral meeting in Moscow on 9 October, according to a press release.
The discussions focused on the overall progress of Bangladesh’s first nuclear power project and the timeline for its first unit to begin generating electricity.
Likhachev said a trial grid connection for the first unit, equipped with a VVER-1200 reactor, could be achieved as soon as possible. He said the project would contribute to Bangladesh’s energy security by supplying reliable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective electricity.
Mahbub Anam said the 2,400-megawatt Rooppur plant would meet approximately 11% of Bangladesh’s total electricity demand.
Likhachev also said commissioning and initial start-up activities for the plant’s second unit were scheduled to begin next year.
The two sides further discussed the potential expansion of Bangladesh’s nuclear energy sector and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation based on the experience gained through the Rooppur project.
