Dhaka, 9 October 2026: Bangladesh and Lithuania have discussed expanding bilateral trade, investment and cooperation in emerging technologies, with Bangladesh urging Lithuania to increase imports of Bangladeshi products and inviting Lithuanian investors to explore opportunities in the country.
The discussions took place during a meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Lithuanian Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Verbickas at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 8.
Kobir highlighted export opportunities for Bangladeshi ready-made garments, textiles, pharmaceutical products, leather and leather goods. He also invited Lithuanian investors to invest in Bangladesh and called for stronger economic cooperation between the two countries.
Both sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in information technology, e-registration, e-governance, financial technology (FinTech), cybersecurity, digital transport systems, artificial intelligence and high-tech medical devices. Verbickas highlighted Lithuania’s expertise and potential in these sectors and expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Bangladesh.
The meeting also covered employment opportunities, human mobility and migration, as well as visa facilitation for Bangladeshi students, businesspeople, investors and tourists. The two sides discussed the repatriation of Rohingya refugees and sought Lithuania’s support on the issue.
They also discussed strengthening bilateral engagement during Lithuania’s upcoming presidency of the European Union from January to June 2027. Verbickas congratulated Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Verbickas expressed hope that Bangladesh-Lithuania relations would strengthen further during Dr Rahman’s tenure as UN General Assembly president and Lithuania’s EU presidency.
Kobir emphasised the role of the EU-Bangladesh Business Forum, compliance with existing business frameworks and regional connectivity centred on Lithuania in the Baltic region and beyond. He said stronger connectivity could help unlock untapped potential, deepen bilateral relations and generate mutual benefits.
